Language Arts Week of 4/29/13

Shakespeare!

"All the world is a stage!"........ memorize your lines!

You should have rewritten or typed your "Jack London's introduction of you."
Family Shields were due Monday, April 29th for full credit.

We'll be reading Romeo and Juliet -- your assignment each evening will be to define the vocabulary words;

Monday:
Took our Simple Solutions Test and handed in our unit.
Saw a Brain Pop on Shakespeare & watched a model of taking notes on video.
Read and pinpointed key ideas in an article on Elizabethan Customs.

HOMEWORK:
Shakespearean Insults!!  Use the guide and make up 5 of your own with your translation.
Define the Vocabulary for Act I

Tuesday:

Book reports due on Wednesday! May 1st (this is an assessment grade)

BOOK REPORT FORMAT Due Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

You had two and 1/2 weeks to choose and read a novel of your choice -- any genre. I hope you've found an interesting novel or non-fiction text to share with us.
Your book report is due May 1st, 2013. (This is an assessment grade so be sure to use ink.)

2. Outline of Jack London’s life (pages 144-147) Green Lit Book
3. Brain pop video quiz

4. Mazy May:  definitions of  10 vocabulary words
5. Protagonist/Antagonist Chart with evidence from the story
6. Vocabulary exercise 
7. Define 10 vocabulary words for “Story of An Eyewitness “ page 159 in Green Lit Book.
8. Chronological chart of activity from the time of the earthquake – see example on 159 – as you read the story on pages 160 – 167
9.Read “Letter” on page 168-169  (take notes)
10. Create a list on looseleaf of London’s style and key works (see page 170 – 173) .

Performance Assessment due Tuesday 4/23:
Use all your materials to create a graphic organizer answering the following prompt:

***How does one’s life experiences influence one’s writing?  Focus on Jack London in your writing.  Use text evidence from outlines, the text and the videos that you watched.

After your organizer is complete, write your five paragraph essay, skipping lines.  Attach the graphic organizer to the back and hand in.
 
Writing:
Rewrite the first two paragraphs of Mazy May using London's amazing technique of describing Walt Masters to describe yourself! due 4/24/13
 
Beginning of our unit on Drama and Shakespeare!
       We recorded our enduring understandings, essential questions and skills & content goals in our Red notebook.   We are reviewing and taking notes on a powerpoint on Drama and its components & vocabulary.
Study your notes each evening.
Make a family shield.  See template in class.
Be reading your novel.  Book report will be posted.

   read story together in class; complete questions & vocabulary in context activity

Current Events due Friday 4/19
    Must be on one of these four topics:
              Boston Marathon,  North Korea,  Immigration Legislation,  Gun control legislation
              follow the format


Novel -- all should be reading a novel (your choice of genre);  book report due Tuesday 4/30.

Language Arts Week of April 8th, 2013

Language Arts

Weekend work

WRITING:

All sections: Finish writing essay;  due Monday, April 8th

What is poetry?
   Paragraph #1  introduction (use a good lead, a quote, a question, etc.)
   Paragraph #2 Body --  the denotation of poetry (define poetry, what are the components of poetry, what techniques does a poet use to create ound?)
   Paragraph # 3 Body -- the connotation of poetry (feelings spoken through poetry, visualization, impact of poetry on people)
   Paragraph #4  Body -- your insights on the importance of poetry;  is it less scary than when we began this unit?  enjoyment of writing poetry
   Paragraph #5 Conclusion -- wrap it up; give some insights on poetry;what you've learned. etc.

Princeton & Yale -- poetry collection folders due Monday, April 8th.

Simple Solutions Test on 45 to 48 on Monday, homework packet will be collected.

READING:

To Kill A Mockingbird -- Harvard (read chapters 23, 24, 25 and complete guided reading)
Flowers for Algernon - Harvard  (finish two poems written about the story).
